French auto parts processor Steep Plastique is making good progress with its latest development project with the early stages of a €50m plant in Viana do Castelo, Portugal complete.
When finally constructed, the plastics injection moulding operation, taking shape in the ‘Plastics Valley’ of the Lanheses industrial park, is destined by 2021 to create up to 250 jobs. Its total covered site then is expected to amount to 35,000m2.
Steep Plastique, a tier one supplier based at Saint-Maurice-de-Beynost near Lyon, France, invested around €10m to build the initial stage of the plant. The firm moved into the 7,000m2 facility some eight months ago with a start up workforce numbering around 50.
Today, the plant area has swelled to 14,356m2, with the bulk of the construction space covering 12,790m2 comprising production halls. Administration offices and a workforce social area together take up 1,566m2 on Steep Plastique’s local Lanheses site of 47,793m2.
Completion of the Portuguese plant, which is part of a growing automotive component manufacturing cluster centred in Viana do Castelo in the north west of the country, will take shape in four separate building phases.
Fifty-year-old Steep Plastique specialises in the production of large plastic mouldings for the automotive sector, including covers for the vehicle engine compartment and under body areas.
Production at the firm’s new Portugal operation will target major motor industry export business. The company is understood to be a parts supplier to more than 20 vehicle manufacturers.
Other companies which have set up production units in the ‘Plastics Valley’ industrial cluster in Lanheses industrial park include the French auto components injection moulder Eurostyle Systems. It launched an €18m processing facility.
Also serving the automotive industry from the northern Portugal base are two plants constructed by the vehicle power train supplier BorgWarner and hydraulic components manufacturer Bontaz.
