Orion Engineered Carbons SA is expanding production capacity for gas blacks at its Kalscheuren plant, near Cologne, Germany.
The company is debottlenecking the production process in response to the growing global market for waterborne and solvent-borne coatings, Orion announced 12 June.
Orion maintains that its gas blacks feature “excellent fineness and a very narrow particle size distribution”, which provide deep black specialty carbon blacks for coating applications.
“The expansion of capacity in Cologne is one more step in the rapid realignment of Orion’s portfolio toward higher value-added carbon blacks for specialty and technical rubber applications,” said Corning Painter, Orion’s chief executive officer.
Orion’s gas blacks are used by customers around the world in a wide range of printing and coating applications, including antistatic and high jet OEM and refinish coatings, in addition to packaging and UV curing inks, added Dr. Sandra Niewiem, VP, business line speciality carbon black.
According to Niewiem, the move to expand capacity in Cologne reflects the “high confidence of our customers in Orion’s products and technical support capabilities.”
