Finnish packaging specialist Huhtamaki and its joint venture partner have inaugurated a new €23m flexible packaging unit in Egypt.
The plant is owned and operated as a JV between the Espoo-based packaging firm and private investor Ayman Korra, who has previously worked with Huhtamaki on fibre packaging in Egypt.
Huhtamaki owns a 75% share in the JV, a company release said 11 April.
The production unit marks Huhtamaki’s first flexible packaging manufacturing footprint in Africa.
Located in the greater Cairo area, the greenfield plant will supply to customers in Egypt as well as other African countries and Europe.
At full capacity, the facility, which started production “this spring”, will employ 250 people..
"The Egyptian market is sizeable, and with the rapid population growth in Africa we expect future growth opportunities both for us and our customers,” said Olli Koponen, EVP flexible packaging.
Huhtamaki has been supplying packaging solutions to Egypt from its production unit in the UAE and India.
“With the new plant we can offer our current and new customers - both in Africa and Europe - the same top quality with shorter lead times," Koponen added.
