German plastic caps & closures manufacturer Bericap is aiming to develop digital authentication solutions for closures in over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and industrial applications.
The Budenheim-based company said 24 April that it had entered into a strategic partnership with near field communications (NFC) specialist Thin Film Electronics ASA (Thinfilm) to develop the solutions.
The collaboration will seek to embed advanced chips into the closures to create “dependable and cost-effective solutions” for brand protection and authentication purposes.
The two companies have begun to integrate NFC into injection-moulded plastic closures, enabling consumers to interact with products and as a means to ensure authenticity.
As part of the collaboration, the two parties will also work with brands to integrate and scale NFC-integrated closures onto high-value products “in an efficient and economical manner”.
“This partnership with Thinfilm allows us to offer another important security and marketing tool for our customers in a range of markets,” said Jörg Thiels, chief executive officer of Bericap Industrial Products.
Thinfilm’s technology and software platform, Thiels added, will help Bericap advance its position within the fast-growing smart and anti-counterfeiting packaging solutions.
“We are looking forward to joining forces in developing product closure solutions that will help thwart the global problem of counterfeiting, refill fraud, tampering, and diversion,” said Kevin Barber, chief executive officer of Thinfilm.
These solutions, he went on to say, will add “differentiation, interactivity, and relevance” to Bericap’s current offering.
Bericap has 24 production plants and manufactures more than 84 billion plastic closures and dispensers a year.
