German lighting and electronics specialist Hella GmbH and French automotive supplier Plastic Omnium have entered into a strategic cooperation to study the integration of lighting technologies into the vehicle exterior.
The two long-standing partners announced the non-exclusive cooperation in a statement 21 Jan, moreover noting that the primary focus would be on the front and rear areas of vehicles.
The partnership will see Hella contributing its competence in automotive lighting technology, while Plastic Omnium will provide expertise in plastics processing for exterior body parts.
To that end, the companies plan to cluster their development resources in this area at a site in Germany.
"Lighting is shaping the vehicle design more than ever. The demand for individualisation and differentiation will continue to grow in the future,” said Hella CEO Rolf Breidenbach.
The new partnership, according to Laurent Burelle, chairman and CEO of Plastic Omnium, will aim to enhance offerings in the fields of smart bumpers and tailgates.
The products, he said, will be “enriched with communication and lighting features".
Hella and Plastic Omnium have been working together since 2004 as part of the joint venture HBPO, which manufactures vehicle front-end modules.
