Harting Technology Group has launched a new high-temperature version of its Han series of multipole connectors, specifically designed for injection moulding of thermoset plastics.
Closed-meshed, cross-linked thermoset molecules require significantly higher temperatures throughout the injection moulding process compared to thermoplastics.
As a result, the electrical connectors that are surface mounted to the tools will experience temperatures of 30 to 40 °C higher than the typical standard connector working temperature of 125-degree °C.
In thermoset injection moulding, these connectors, which carry the temperature monitoring thermocouple contacts, tend to have a reduced operating life.
The potential breakdown of the component can occur during the plastic assembly process and can hamper critical mould temperature control, potentially leading
to a decline in quality of the final product and material loss.
The new connectors developed by Harting are claimed to withstand up to 200°C and add “significantly” to the operational lifetime of
thermoset plastic injection mould tools.
Among others, Harting has opted for a high-temperature rubber coating for bulkhead connector seals to prevent them from melting or adhering to other integrated component parts over the full operating temperature range, even if they are left mated for several years.
“Many of the hoods and housing coatings and lacquers available on the market are not suitable for long-term use at high temperatures as they can cause melting, which can lead to mated parts sticking together," the company noted.
The connectors also feature high-temperature-resistant copper alloy contacts and liquid crystal polymer inserts able to withstand the high ambient conditions and the additional heat generated inside the housing when under mated load.
