Evonik develops high-transparency compound for optical applications

German speciality materials supplier Evonik Industries AG has developed a new polyamide moulding compound, with 90% transparency, for high-end optical applications.

The new compound, Trogamid myCX high flow, has “crystal clear transparency, excellent wear comfort and high durability along with improved processing capabilities”, said Evonik in a statement 16 Jan.

The material also has “significantly improved” flowability compared to similar high-performance competitors. This makes the processing of the compound possible at a temperature at least 20°C lower than other materials, therefore improving energy efficiency and productivity.

The polymer also stands out for its low density of 1.03 g/cm², specifically designed for demanding optical applications such as premium lenses or high-end visors for ski and snowboard goggles. In addition, it has excellent mechanical properties such as resistance to stress cracking, and high tensile strength.

Evonik’s Trogamid portfolio of materials are designed for the optical industry and include polymers for lenses and frames as well as materials used for UV protection or polarising films for high-contrast vision.

The speciality chemicals company will present Trogamid myCX high flow at MIDO eyewear trade show in Milan, Italy 23-25 Feb.
