Industrial packaging specialist Greif Inc has made a multi-million-euro investment in an intermediate bulk container (IBC) line at its production plant in San Roque, in the Cadiz region of Spain.

Greif previously produced large steel drums at the plant, and the new upgrade will add production capacity for the company’s GCUBE container portfolio.

The upgrade included the installation of a fully automated line for the production of IBCs as well as the building of a fully automated warehouse for the containers, Greif said 17 Dec.

The San Roque facility is expected to to deliver products to the olive oil industry, which is a key driver of the region’s economy.

Greif said in its statement that it had already started production of the GCUBE IBCs at the plant. Production will be ramped up to 150,000 units per year in the future.

“This is a significant step forward for Greif and the local economy. It will allow us to better serve our customers and local market demands in southern Spain as well as the North African markets of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia,” Joaquim Duarte, Greif general manager Iberia.

Greif entered the IBC market with the acquisition of Fustiplast in 2010 and in the last eight years has become one of the fastest growing and highest investing companies in IBC production.

Greif currently has nine IBC facilities across EMEA and 13 globally.
