Evonik Industries AG has started up a new multi-layer coextrusion plant for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) flat films, with select customers already receiving samples from the plant.
The plant, located in Weiterstadt, 20km south of Frankfurt, produces multi-layer films with a width of 2,700mm, which according to Evonik is “the largest available format worldwide” for flat PMMA films.
The Essen, Germany-based speciality materials company did not disclose financial details of the plant but said it had invested “a double-digit million amount” in the Weiterstadt site.
At the plant produces coextruded films using Evonik’s base PMMA material, supplemented with one or more additional functional layers. The films, according to Evonik, are ideal for extreme weather applications.
“With this plant, we are investing in a market segment that continues to show positive development and promises strong growth potential,” said Martin Krämer, head of the acrylic products business Line.
In particular, the manufacturers of facade materials will benefit from the new plant, especially in high-growth regions such as Asia.
PMMA films are also used in microfluidic devices, in window profile wrapping and in the graphics industry.
Evonik has confirmed to PNE that the new plant is part of its methyl methacrylates (MMA) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) business, which is being divested by the company.
