Orion Engineered Carbons SA has acquired acetylene carbon black manufacturer Société du Noir d'Acétylène de l'Aubette, SAS (SN2A) from LyondellBasell Industries Holdings BV and its French affiliate.

The carbon black supplier said the purchase, for an undisclosed amount, was completed 31 Oct.

Acetylene black is an ultra-pure premium speciality carbon black distinguished by its high electrical and thermal conductivity. Lithium-ion batteries and high-end electrical cables are key applications for this material.

The bolt-on acquisition is in line with Orion’s previously-stated strategy to increase focus on speciality blacks and will add acetylene black to the company’s portfolio.

“With this platform we are going to significantly strengthen our capabilities in the lithium-ion battery market and broaden our position in other attractive markets,” said Corning Painter, chief executive officer of Orion Engineered Carbons, who took over the position earlier in October.

SN2A was founded in 1987 and is headquartered at Berre l’Etang, near Marseille, France.

As part of the deal, LyondellBasell has agreed with a long-term feedstock supply to the Berre l’Etang facility. Orion said it was planning to “strengthen production capabilities” at the French site.
