Solvay SA has open a new production plant for its Solef branded polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in China, to meet growing demand for the thermoplastic polymer in energy-efficient, environmental and industrial applications.

The new production unit is located on Solvay’s Changshu site which started work in 2015.

With the start-up of the unit in July, Solvay now produces Solef PVDF in Europe, the US and Asia.

The material is used for applications such as lithium-ion batteries (li-ion) in hybrid and electric vehicles (xEV), for offshore oil and gas pipes and liners and in membranes for water purification.

Solvay also produces its Tecnoflon fluoroelastomers (FKM) at the plant and markets it in Asia.
