French automotive parts supplier Plastic Omnium is investing €20m in expanding and digitising ∑-Sigmatech, its Lyon-based centre dedicated to exterior components and modules.
In a 28 Nov statement, the French company said the “ambitious programme” to expand the site was being made in the face of new challenges of connected, autonomous and cleaner vehicles.
The project, which will run from mid-2018 through to 2020, is part of Plastic Omnium’s strategy to build up new skills in areas including mechatronics, micromechanics, virtual reality and collaborative robot resources.
The investment will see addition of technical equipment and new building and office spaces to make room for staff increase from 550 to 700 by 2020.
The expansion project will also see the total area of the site increase to 23,000m², of which 8,000m² will be office spaces. A "life center" building will also be added to the site, which will include reception, restaurant and meeting areas as well as sports facilities.
The investment follows the French supplier’s recent announcements about the construction of Δ-Deltatech, an R&D centre for new energy sources in Brussels and an investment in Ξ PO-CellTech in the fuel cell industry.
