A partnership of German entities Covestro AG, KraussMaffei Group GmbH and the Institute of Plastics Processing at RWTH Aachen University has won an award for its advances in the industrial use of pultrusion with polyurethane resins.
The Specialist Association of Foamed Plastics and Polyurethanes (FSK) recognised the collaboration for the FSK 2017 award in the category “Technology – Processing and Chemistry”.
According to materials supplier Covestro, the panel of judges commended the increased cost-efficiency of the method for processors and the partnering approach to the project, during the awards ceremony in Gurten, Austria.
The three partners have cooperated to enhance the chemistry, technology and process to “significantly increase” productivity as well as process and product quality, Covestro added.
Processors, it added, can now cut costs significantly compared to the previous method.
Machinery and injection moulding supplier KraussMaffei unveiled its first complete system for continuous pultrusion, iPul in June, which would allow for industrial-scale pultrusion.
In the new systems, the fibres are no longer impregnated in an open process, but rather by a metering machine in a closed injection chamber.
This allows for a wide variety of resins to be processed, including highly reactive polyurethane systems.
Polyurethane resins offer significant advantages over established pultrusion materials, such as epoxy, unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins.
Their low viscosity, good fibre wetting and high reactivity support faster processing speeds than epoxies, which reduces manufacturing costs.
Covestro markets the polyurethane systems Baydur PUL and Desmocomp for pultrusion.
