Borealis and Borouge launch new LLDPE family based on proprietary BBT technology

Borealis and Borouge today announced the launch of Anteo, a new family of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) packaging grades for the global packaging market delivering easy processability at lower extruder pressure, better sealing integrity and improved puncture resistance.

The companies launched the new family globally at three different geographic locations  - Abu Dhabi, Shanghai and Linz  - all at the same time. It is the first time in their collaboration that they jointly manufacture a product at one single location and then make it globally available.

Anteo was developed using Borealis’ proprietary Borstar Bimodal Terpolymer - BBT  - technology, which combines smart catalyst design with a two-reactor system process with two comonomers. At the launch meeting in Linz, Plastics News Europe talked to Maurits van Tol, senior VP innovation & technology at Borealis, about the importance of this technology.

Van Tol: "This is something no one else can do."

“It’s not just a simple launch,” he emphasized. “We are using the Borstar technology platform and utilising the freedom it offers in molecular engineering by combining a new catalyst system with a proven Borstar multi-reactor set-up. This is something that no-one else can do.”

The significance of the Borstar technology, said Van Tol, is having the two reactors which can produce different molecular designs independently from each other. “So there’s a multitude of combinations of design, but then you need the right catalyst to form those ethylene and higher alphaolefin combinations. And that is a very important part of today’s launch. The big news today is the combination of a new, very versatile catalyst with a very versatile Borstar technology.”

Conventional unimodal produced linear low density polyethylenes often combine moderate mechanical properties with less-than-great processability regarding bubble stability and extrusion pressure. The BBT technology overcomes these problems by providing bimodality in molecular weight, bimodality in density and tailored comonomer incorporation. The result: polyethylene resins with outstanding processability.

Anteo can be processed at extruder pressures that are over 15% less than conventional metallocene LLDPE sealants.

The advantage to that, said Anton Wolfsberger, head of marketing consumer products and pipe at Borealis, is that a substantial reduction in energy consumption during extrusion can be achieved - by up to 20%, he said.

“In addition to that, it has excellent sealing integrity, optical properties and puncture resistance,” he said.

He went on to explain that, in terms of recyclability and design for recycling “this total solution that we offer is an enabler to make mono-material packages that can be 100% recyclable. This means the product can be made of multiple layers of polyolefins with different functionalities which you can recycle in one go.”

The first grades in the growing Anteo product family, Anteo FK1820 and Anteo FK1828, are commercially available in Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Africa and Asia as of the global launch on 25 October 2017.
