US Plastic packaging manufacturer Berry Global Group is opening a centre of excellence for carded nonwovens in Terno, Italy, later this month marking the end of a 2-year investment programme.
The company said the $20m investment will help it enhance production, conversion and innovation capabilities in the health and hygiene market.
New and upgraded production lines optimise the production of low and high basis weight, air-through bonded carded nonwovens.
A new spooling asset has also been installed to improve downstream capability.
Additionally, a multi-layer pilot line and an application laboratory have been installed with focus on innovation, supporting customers in development of enhanced functionality.
The company said the investment in Italy was part of its bid to maintain its ‘leading’ position in supplying the hygiene industry.
The company announced in July that it will be investing in a “state-of-the-art” Reicofil RF5 spunmelt line at an Asia location, with the capacity of 20 kilotonnes.
The line will be targeting health and hygiene markets in Asia as demand grows,
Berry said it expected start-up in 2019.
