UK egg company cracks plastics bio-filler breakthrough

UK-based custom colour masterbatch producer Silvergate Plastics has launched a partnership with local company Just Egg Ltd to develop a bio-filler produced from crushed egg shells.

In this new partnership, Silvergate which manufactures colour, additive and multi-component masterbatches, has agreed to take in crushed and cleaned egg shells from Just Egg Ltd, and process them into filler for masterbatch, which can be used in any application.

In a 12 May press release, Silvergate said the egg shells will replace traditional fillers and help reduce the amount of ground polymer used in the masterbatch formulation.

The “ground-breaking” bio-filler can be used to create any colour, including black, the company said.

Based in Leicester, UK, Just Egg manufactures hard boiled eggs, egg mayonnaise and egg-related products.

The partnership was developed as Just Egg, which produces 60m eggs per year, sought an innovative and ecologically sound way to discard egg shells.

To avoid the cost of landfilling the shells, which was £50,000 (€58,000) per annum, Just Eggs partnered with the University of Leicester, to study the use of egg shells as fillers for plastics.

It also set up an egg shell recycling plant in 2015.
